Astrid takes, for the first time, a step into public debate on problems of modern society. The new marginal income tax has this effect on self-employed persons – which artists and writers belong – that you actually should pay more tax than you receive in income.

Astrid writes the story “Pomperipossa in Monismanien”. Pomperipossa becomes a fiscal policy encounter that echoes around the whole country, and Astrid gets into close battle with minister of finance Gunnar Sträng.

Pomperipossa

Up ‘til now Astrid has protected her life in anonymity, she has scarcely been taken pleasure in the public life that followed in the footsteps of fame...

Her upbringing in Småland has meant an economic and simple ordinary life, were she ‘reheats her rice pudding for lunch several days in a row’, collects the crust on the bread, and make fish- and potato stew for dinner from the leftovers from yesterday.” (*)

Astrid Lindgren’s books, movies, and TV-series is a on the ’70:s a Swedish export product of importance, which brings good money to it’s originator. But Astrid is neither interested in money nor investments, under the years she had been given money to BRIS and similar organisations, but also to individual people.

New Years 1972 she wrote in her diary:

“Money have I earned godforsaken more than ever…that is anxious. I do not want money. Luckily G. Sträng does.” (*) Astrid Lindgren has never complained about taxes, like most high-income people do. On the contrary. “I gladly pay my taxes” she explains more than ones.

But in 1976 the reality exceed the story – The new marginal income tax rules has this effect on self-employed persons – which artists and writers belong – that you actually should pay more tax than you receive in income. And the stretch on her benevolence has reached its end for Astrid. But, how should she best point out this absurdity? In the form of a tale of course, what else.

The story of “Pomperipossa in Monismanien” was front-page material that rocked Sweden and its Socialistic government. The government decides to go on offensive attack in the first round – minister of finance refuted Astrid Lindgren in scornful terms – that would prove itself to be one serious and fatal mistake. First later on they admitted that Astrid Lindgren had pointed out a mistake that was to be corrected. But their credibility was long gone for Social Democrat Astrid Lindgren, and the battle billowed on. Now between her and the social democracy – and the general election just got closer. In the press Astrid was both described as the witch that guards her gold and very brave and truthful.

“Pomperipossa in Monismanien”

Pomperipossa really loved her country, it forests, mountains and lakes and the green grove, but not only that, she also loved the people living there. And even the wise men ruling it, she thought they were wise in their ways so she voted for them every time there were to be an election for wise men controlling Monismanien. They, whom now been supervising and bossing around in more than 40 years, had created such a fine community she thought, where no one had to be poor, and everyone got a piece of welfare cookie. So Pomperispossa was happy that she herself  been able to contribute in part of the baking.

-          Do you know that your marginal income tax is 102 percent this year?

-          Ohh, you talk!! said Pomperipossa. That many percent doesn’t exist! Because she was not so gifted to be among the higher mathematics, you see.

-          Oh yes! she heard. In Monesmania there is and endless amount of percent! And if you added marginal income tax and the social fees that Pomperipossa should pay, since she was self-employed, you actually got 102 percent, then Pomperispossa could say whatever she wanted! (---)

Astrid Lindgren is justified
Olof Palme promises that the rules will be changed

Olof Palme: “ We politicians should not be worse than confessing when we got on the wrong track. But the essential here is not only she was right  - but she must be justified – we will change this.”

from "Astrid Lindgren – inte bara sagotant" NORRA MAGASINET, TV 2

Bengt Göransson in 1995: We should have listened

“Several leading social democrats, like Kjell-Olof Feldt and Bengt Göransson, have later expressed their regret that minister of finance and the government didn’t immediately listen to Astrid Lindgren. At a ABF-seminar in 1995 declared Göransson: ‘What Astrid Lindgren attacked was what to be called the public foolishness, and her attack swept a ridicule over the people responsible.’”
